Explore Birmingham: Smart city - walking Birmingham

Event Description: Birmingham City Council is working with Urban Initiatives to create a new integrated vision and direction for the city. The Big City Plan will ensure a coherent approach to regeneration and development, guiding the city’s economic, social, physical, cultural and environmental future.

At the heart of the Big City Plan is making Birmingham an exemplar of the low-carbon city. Using the smart city concept, it will become a great walking city, with new urban neighbourhoods and mixed-use developments that will look to re-use its rich heritage of industrial buildings for living, working and civic life.

The event will introduce the Big City Plan and be followed by a walk from the Custard Factory in Digbeth to St Paul’s Square in the Jewellery Quarter, passing through many of the regeneration areas and projects that have been successfully developed. The walk will end at a venue for drinks in the Jewellery Quarter.

The event will focus on the complexity of Birmingham, both in its topography and also the severance caused by its transport infrastructure. It will look at the historic development of Birmingham as an industrial city and the challenges of transforming this into an expanded city centre.
