Explore Birmingham: The Cube - the architect's view

Event Description: Get the architect’s view, visit the site’s viewing platform and get the answers to everything you want to know about The Cube.

The Cube – which is currently on site – is the final phase of the highly successful Mailbox development in the centre of the city. The 23-storey scheme creates more than 42,000 square metres for a vibrant combination of shops, bars, cafes, offices and apartments in a single, stunning building. It will also include an automated parking system, a boutique hotel and rooftop restaurant.

From the outset the design team sought to create a new landmark building for Birmingham which fits into its context and which draws people in. It was essential that the building created a strong visual presence, immediately identifiable as a gateway to the canal and city centre area to the north.

Among the features contributing to The Cube’s environmental sustainability are: the modular cladding system offers infinite flexibility to adapt the glazing of each façade to potential solar gain; natural ventilation; canal-water cooling; and the installation of centralised plant.
